Our Doctors
We work as a team of highly skilled ophthalmologists, clinical optometrists, orthoptists, theatre nurses and trained counsellors, under the careful guidance of Dr Mark Medownick. Our team is committed to helping you achieve a successful outcome, and we make every effort to ensure that your procedure is event-free and you achieve the best possible vision.
Our four doctors are all specialist eye surgeons, and are some of Australia’s most skilled and leading ophthalmologists. They are among the pioneers of laser eye surgery and refractive surgery techniques, and routinely perform all surgery without the need for injections around the eye, which requires the highest level of surgical skill. Together, they have helped to improve vision of many tens of thousands of patients in Australia.
As respected members of the ophthalmic community, our doctors teach trainee ophthalmologists in modern techniques of cataract surgery. They are often called upon to present papers at medical conferences and seminars, as well as lecture to general practitioners and optometrists on eye conditions.
Dr Mark Medownick
Dr Medownick is the founder and Medical Director of Medownick Laser Eye Clinic, and one of Australia’s foremost surgeons in laser vision correction.
A true pioneer, Dr Medownick is responsible for significant innovations in laser eye surgery that have set new standards in Australia and the world. In a career spanning more than four decades, Dr Medownick has witnessed the evolution of laser eye surgery first-hand.
Dr Medownick was the first ophthalmologist in Australia to perform excimer laser vision correction for long-sightedness. Always an innovator, Dr Medownick remains at the leading edge of new surgical technology. Drawing on research and advancements from overseas, he is constantly evaluating and introducing new techniques that have the potential to decrease surgical intrusion into the eye, minimise risk, and reduce discomfort and pain for his patients.
Dr Medownick was also the first in Australia and one of the first in the world to use Advanced Laser Surface (ALSA, or PRK) treatments to improve the clarity of vision after Lasik procedures. Dr Medownick was invited by leading American surgeons to collaborate on using PRK to improve vision after a Lasik procedure. These results were presented at major American and European cataract and refractive surgery meetings.
He is married to Dr Alla Medownick, who has a PhD in mathematics and physics, and who supports Mark in all his endeavours. Medownick Laser Eye Clinic is their life.
The couple live in Melbourne where they are active patrons of Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, the Melbourne Opera and Opera Australia which allows them to indulge their passion for music. They have been generous donors and sponsors over many years of Epworth Medical Foundation and various Eye Research Organizations, including Indigenous Eye Health.
